In its most simplistic form, the Estate Administration process involves the collection, marshaling and preservation of assets, and verification and payment of debts.
It also includes preparation and filing of the required death tax returns, accounting, and distribution to the heirs in accordance with the wishes of the decedent as expressed in his or her will.
In the absence of a will, distribution would be made in accordance with the intestate laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or the State in which the individual domiciled.
Estate Administration Process
The process of Estate Administration requires document review and investigation in order to accurately determine an individual’s assets and liabilities. Death tax returns, as well as income tax returns are required, and governmental agency approvals must be obtained prior to an estate being closed. Postmortem tax planning is an integral part of the administration. Once the process has been completed, all of the transactions during administration are detailed in an accounting which is provided to the heirs and/or the Court, together with distribution proposals.
